Are swollen lymph Nodes normal?

Are swollen or painful lymph nodes normal. Like I get them 2 or 3 times a year. They will hurt and become swollen in my neck and groin. But they always seem to go away before I can get to a doctor. I'll have a sore throat sometimes when it happens. Is this normal?? What can I do to help with the pain?
